Students in the Social Practice program at Faculty of Arts and Sciences, UNITEC, in Auckland, New Zealand.

The researcher teaches the Professional Practice course in which she uses a learning contract method of conducting the course.

Can using a learning contract method with lessened risk of failure lead to a heightened sense of safety and exploration, hard work and satisfaction among social work students facing professional issues?

From the self-evaluations and reflections required of the students, the researcher found that:

Students liked the process because it kept them focuses on what was to be learned or produced.

They appreciated the cooperative nature of the process as they felt more empowered and had a voice in what was expected of them.

Many found the self-evaluations difficult, though they also voiced that they knew it would help improve their own work.
