Litchfield, B. C., Mata, J., & Gray, L. (2007). Engaging General Biology Students with Learning Contracts. Journal of College Science Teaching, 37(2), 34-39. Two biology courses at the University of South Alabama, taught by the same professor, though in different semesters.  One course was used as a control (n=33)--no learning contract used.  In the second (n=35), a limited learning contract with activity choices was used. Learning contract was used for one course, not for the other.  Then, comparisons were made as to grades and withdrawals. The learning contract group had higher numbers of A and B grades with significantly fewer failing grades and withdrawals.
