Jerrard, R. & Jefsioutine, M.(2006). Reflections on using online contracts for work-based learning and teaching in art and design. Art, Design & Communication in Higher Education, 5(1), 55-69.
|
Primary reflections were from 15 students of the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design (BIAD) of the University of
Central England (UCE) taking online courses--MA Product Design or MA
Design Management. The four tutors involved in the learning contract method were also queried.
|
BIAD has been studying the use of learning contracts for some time. Online contracts were used to see if the same ownership and other favored qualities were experienced by students. |
Students appreciated the ability to expand their horizons and explore professional possibilities.
Students liked the fact that they could negotiate and felt empowered.
Tutors noticed that students spent more time thinking "on task" about their assignments.
Students found that they experienced deeper learning.
A very small number of students found the idea of self-directed learning perplexing and could not settle into that method.
Tutors pointed out that the time element may be an issue in using learning contracts.
