Sayer, M., De Saintonge, C., Evans, D. & Wood, D. (2002). Support for students with academic difficulties. Medical Education, 36(7), 643-650.

Twenty-four 4th and 5th year medical students were identified as failing examinations.  These students received individual educational diagnosis (free

discussion and a semi-structured interview). Each negotiated a problem list, action plan and learning

contract with course tutors.  Sixteen received tutorials and extra academic support.

Researchers wanted to know if an intervention process, including learning contracts, could improve student motivation and scores, moving medical students out of the failure range into success. While reported reasons for failure were varied, researchers found that the academic areas were similar.  After the intervention, participants reported being more motivated, both in studying and in their potential career.  Their examination grades (pass rates) also greatly improved.
